Salary and Benefits:
Annual base salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents varies based on grade, ranging from GL-5/GL-7 at $51,632 to $92,219 per year. Border Patrol Agents can select from a range of federal employment benefits, including health, dental, and other insurance plans, a generous leave program, and access to the Thrift Savings Plan, akin to a traditional ROTH 401(k).
Incentives:
Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents are eligible for up to $20,000 in incentives, with the first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy.
Retention Incentive: Additional eligibility for up to $40,000 in incentives distributed over four years.
Duty Locations: Your duty assignment will be determined by operational needs at the time of offer. Possible locations include various sectors along the Southwest Border. Relocation may be required based on job assignments.
A fully trained Border Patrol Agent may also qualify for a pay increase of up to an additional 25% of base pay under the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014.
Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Border Patrol Agent, you will play a vital role in safeguarding America through the following duties:
Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of immigration and customs violations.
Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers.
Conducting patrols of international boundaries.
Utilizing various resources for surveillance and enforcement activities.
Qualifications:
To qualify for GL-5 grade level:
One year of general work experience demonstrating critical decision-making and composure under stress.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; or a combination of experience and education.
To qualify for GL-7 grade level:
One year of specialized work experience in law enforcement or similar fields demonstrating decision-making and interpersonal effectiveness.
A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievements, or a combination of experience and education.
Other Requirements:
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
Must be under 40 years old at the time of selection.
Formal training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, which includes language proficiency training in Spanish.
