Mobile Commons is a trusted SMS engagement platform focused on political campaigns and advocacy organizations. They are seeking a driven, self-starting Business Development Representative to help grow their presence in this market by building a pipeline of potential clients and engaging with them through various outreach methods.
Responsibilities
- Research and identify target organizations — federal, state, and local campaigns, nonprofits, advocacy orgs, and government agencies — using LinkedIn Sales Navigator and public sources
- Find and map the right contacts within each org (Comms Directors, Digital Directors, Campaign Managers, Exec Directors) and build outreach lists in Salesforce
- Run multi-touch outbound sequences across email, phone, and LinkedIn — personalized to each buyer’s context, not copy-paste templates
- Qualify inbound leads and respond within 24 hours
- Attend political tech conferences, advocacy convenings, and DC-area networking events to build relationships and surface new pipeline
- Identify upcoming events relevant to our ICP each quarter and flag opportunities for in-person engagement
- Represent Mobile Commons professionally at industry gatherings; follow up with contacts in Salesforce within 48 hours of any event
- Conduct initial discovery calls to understand org size, use case, current tools, and buying authority
- Apply a structured qualification approach before handing off to the AE — no cold handoffs
- Deliver handoff summaries that include: who you spoke with, what they need, why now, and any competitive context
- Log all activity in Salesforce same day — calls, emails, events, and meeting notes
- Keep pipeline records clean and current; surface stale or at-risk prospects in weekly check-ins
Skills
- 0–2 years of experience in sales, organizing, campaigns, or a related field — we care more about drive and curiosity than a resume full of BDR titles
- Genuine interest in political campaigns, advocacy organizations, or civic tech — you should find this world interesting, not just tolerable
- Self-starter who takes initiative without waiting to be told what to do next
- Strong written communication — you can write a sharp, human email that doesn't sound like a template
- Organized and detail-oriented — you keep your own records clean and follow through on commitments
- Comfortable making cold calls and attending events where you don't know anyone yet
- Familiarity with Salesforce or a comparable CRM is a plus, but not required
- Located in or willing to relocate to the DC area preferred; strong remote candidates will be considered
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance — majority employer-covered
- 401(k) with company match
- Flexible, remote-friendly work environment
- Paid time off + company holidays, including Election Day
- Professional development budget (conferences, training, industry events)
- Travel reimbursement for approved networking events and conferences
