The Data Center Engineer role involves building, maintaining, and scaling the physical infrastructure that powers the DigitalOcean cloud, with responsibilities including troubleshooting hardware and network issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities
- Deploying, maintaining, and optimizing DigitalOcean’s data center infrastructure
- Racking, stacking, and cabling servers, power distribution units (PDUs), and network switches
- Diagnosing and repairing hardware issues, performing upgrades, integrations, and rebuilds
- Troubleshooting network connectivity, server hardware, and Linux OS-related issues
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve deployment efficiency, automation, and monitoring
- Installing and configuring servers, switches, routers, and storage hardware
- Managing hardware lifecycle, including RMA processing, shipping/receiving, and inventory tracking and auditing
- Coordinating and tracking remote work requests to ensure seamless infrastructure operations
Skills
- Strong Hands-on experience with various types servers (including GPU), networking hardware, cabling, and infrastructure components
- Knowledge of infrastructure cabling standards for both data and power
- Basic proficiency with Linux OS, including command-line operations and troubleshooting
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to debug network, hardware, and OS issues efficiently
- Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—with a collaborative, customer-focused mindset
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-availability environment and respond to incidents proactively
- Comfort with participating in an on-call rotation to support 24/7 operations
- Valid driver's license and willingness to drive between locations as needed
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (10% - 15%)
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
