Job Description
The Process Engineer is responsible for documenting, optimizing, and standardizing manufacturing processes within a cannabis production facility to ensure safety, compliance, efficiency, and product consistency. This role supports continuous improvement initiatives, drives operational excellence, and collaborates closely with production, quality, maintenance, and compliance teams to enhance workflow and reduce variability in packaging, post-harvest, extraction, and kitchen.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Develop, refine, and document manufacturing processes for packaging, material handling, post-harvest, extraction, infusion, and edible production.
· Identify efficiency opportunities and lead efforts to reduce cycle times, increase throughput, and minimize waste.
· Implement Lean Six Sigma methodologies to improve workflow and equipment utilization.
· Support scale-up activities for new product lines and process changes.
· Collect, analyze, present production data to identify trends, process deviations, or bottlenecks.
· Create dashboards, SOP updates, process maps, and process controls to ensure consistency and accuracy.
· Monitor KPIs such as yield, extraction efficiency, labor utilization, downtime, and scrap.
· Educate area managers on the principles of process efficiency.
· Evaluate, specify, and support commissioning of new equipment.
· Ensure equipment operates within validated parameters and meets regulatory requirements.
· Work closely with QA/Compliance teams to ensure all processes adhere to documented SOP, state regulations, cGMP principles, and internal quality standards.
· Develop and maintain/update process documentation including SOPs, batch records, validations, and change controls.
· Champion safety by incorporating risk assessments, ergonomic improvements, and hazard reduction into process design in conjunction with Safety team.
· Train production teams on new processes, equipment, and best practices.
· Support new product development by collaborating with R&D on formulation feasibility and process capability.
· Participate in internal audits, CAPA investigations, and continuous improvement committees.
Minimum Qualifications
· Must be able to obtain a state medical marijuana badge and pass a background check.
· Must be able to communicate with subordinates, peers, and leadership effectively and professionally.
· Must perform under high pressure situations.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced, always evolving, and challenging environment.
· Excellent attention to detail - we operate in a heavily regulated industry with strict regulations that must be met with every process, without fail.
· Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
· Ability to organize and write clear procedures.
· Effective time-management skills and the ability to multi-task and delegate.
· Positive attitude and strong work ethic. Must be a team player with a “can do” attitude.
· Available to travel as needed up to 50%.
· Reliable transportation.
Education & Experience Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
· 2 to 5 years of experience in process engineering, manufacturing engineering, or production optimization.
· Strong knowledge of Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma tools, SOP development, and workflow mapping.
· Experience with data analysis software (Excel, Power BI, Lucid Chart or similar).
· Experience in cannabis, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, or similar GMP-regulated industry.
· Knowledge of OSHA requirements and safety risk assessments.
Physical Requirements
· Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

· The ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces
· The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
· The ability to wear personal protective gear correctly
· The ability to work in bright/hot/humid conditions
