The Athletic’s newsroom of 500+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs. About the Role The Athletic seeks skilled, motivated reporters to join its rapid-response investigative unit. Applicants will be multi-faceted journalists, adept at quickly jumping on a story, finding angles of pursuit and capable of producing quality work on deadline. They will also lead or contribute to longer investigations that stem from that rapid work. Candidates should be obsessed with accuracy, capable of producing clean and clear copy, understand story framing and possess the drive to help The Athletic own the biggest stories in sports. This position is based in the United States or Canada. Responsibilities • Ability to deliver high-level, in-the-moment stories when news dictates. • Be meticulous and thorough when sourcing stories. • Clean, skilled writing in all formats. • Balance short- and long-term projects. • Utilize a creative approach to story ideation and formats. • Generate executable story and project ideas. • Work collaboratively with colleagues. Requirements • 5+ years of experience in journalism. • Proven mastery of journalistic standards, including accuracy, fairness and other critical values, and has a clear understanding of sensitive subjects and source vetting. • Has experience with a wide range of reporting techniques, including data analysis and public records requests, and is comfortable using AI technology. • Adept at developing sources and convincing people to go on the record. • Does not shy away from urgent, high-stakes stories, but can also balance quick investigations and longer projects that may require months of digging. • Capable of collaborating with colleagues from multiple entry points. • Can travel, as necessary, for stories, team meetings and trainings.
