About the Role
As a Classroom Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the classroom teacher in all aspects of the school day. You will provide a variety of generalized support services to students and schools, assisting the teacher in achieving educational objectives by working with individual students or small groups. Your primary responsibility will be to assist students in developing the necessary skills to perform academic, social, and behavioral tasks, while modeling appropriate behaviors and interactions with students and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the classroom teacher in all aspects of the school day, including instruction, supervision, and support services
- Support instruction by working with students individually and in small groups, preparing instructional materials, and assisting in classroom set up and clean up
- Manage individual and classroom climate and social-emotional needs, supervising students at recess, lunch, snack, and mask breaks, or other duties as assigned
- Support students with self-care skills (toileting, dressing, etc.) as needed, and provide assistance to students during special classes (art, music, etc.)
- Assist in implementing positive behavior support plans designed by the teacher and/or other school personnel, and monitor student use of instructional and other equipment
- Serve as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher, maintaining the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of the classroom teachers
Qualifications and Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following qualifications and skills:
Essential Qualifications:
- High School diploma and college-level courses (60 credits preferred) in secondary education, special education, or a related field
- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred, with a teaching certificate or instructional experience in a public school setting
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of effective teacher assistant principles, practices, and trends
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with supervising teachers, students, staff, families, and the school community
- Ability to perform essential job duties at a high level, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a public school setting, with a strong understanding of educational principles and practices
- Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately, with excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to recognize areas of concern relating to student issues and propose or recommend appropriate solutions to problems
- Ability to use online platforms and support remote/distance learning experiences, with a strong commitment to ongoing professional development and growth
