Job Summary
The Associate Counsel will be responsible for defending lawsuits filed in Washington courts and other first-party insurance defense. This position requires a highly motivated and experienced attorney with a strong background in litigation, particularly in insurance defense and personal injury law. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work remotely, with initial training requiring 2-3 days in the office, and will be expected to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, and other case-related appearances.
Key Responsibilities
- Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda to support the defense of lawsuits
- Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
- Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
- Defending cases by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable
- Documenting files in a clear, concise, and professional written manner, to be understood by customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees of the organization
- Following complex instructions, resolving conflicts or facilitating conflict resolution, and demonstrating strong organization, priority setting, and multi-tasking skills
Essential Qualifications
- 2-6+ years of experience in litigation, with a focus on insurance defense and personal injury law
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the Washington Bar, with a valid license to practice law in Washington
- Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees of the organization
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience, particularly in insurance defense and personal injury law
- Experience with insurance defense-related litigation, including first-party insurance defense
- Ability to communicate effectively in a professional manner, both in person and via telephone, written correspondence, and email

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits
