Job Overview

As a Public Safety Dispatcher I-II, you will be responsible for receiving and evaluating 911 police, fire, and medical emergency calls, dispatching public safety emergency units, and performing a variety of non-sworn office duties in support of law enforcement activities. You will work on a rotating twelve-hour shift, including weekends, holidays, and off-hours shifts, and may be required to work extended shifts in relief or emergency situations.

Essential Qualifications

To be eligible for this recruitment opportunity, applicants must have a minimum of one year of responsible clerical work involving heavy public contact and be able to type a minimum of 35 words per minute. Preferred Qualifications

Public Safety Dispatcher I: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and one (1) year responsible clerical work involving heavy public contact. Public Safety Dispatcher II: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and two (2) years of experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher I. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver's License by time of appointment. POST Public Safety Dispatcher Certification is required for Public Safety Dispatcher II.

Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to assess and prioritize emergency situations while remaining calm and using sound, independent judgment. You will be able to memorize codes, names, street locations, and other information, and interpret, apply, and explain policies, procedures, and regulations. You will also be able to attend to multiple activities simultaneously, obtain necessary information from individuals in stressful or emergency situations, and compile and summarize information to prepare accurate, clear, and concise reports.
