Forensic Materials Engineer - Insurance Industry, HYBRID (Concord, ON)

SCM Insurance Services is seeking a Forensic Materials Engineer to join their Collision Reconstruction Team. The successful candidate will conduct root cause material failure investigations to support insurance and legal proceedings across various industries, developing problem-solving skills and technical knowledge in materials science and mechanical engineering. Responsibilities - Lead projects from start to finish, ensuring that timelines stay on track - Communicating directly with clients to confirm project scope, budget, scheduling, and findings - Assess, analyze and report on the origin and cause of material failures - Interview witnesses and service personnel, and obtain background information and documentation on a loss - Attend sites and document evidence with photographs, measurements, and detailed notes - Conduct materials characterization and analysis, including non-destructive and destructive laboratory examinations of evidence - Provide verbal and written reports to clients Skills - Minimum Bachelor's degree in Materials/Mechanical Engineering - Professional Engineering License or the ability to become licensed in the province of Ontario is a requirement - Must have a valid G license, access to a vehicle, and the ability to work in remote areas, as well as in a range of temperatures and weather conditions - In-depth knowledge of materials science (metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites), microscopy (optical, digital, and scanning electron), fractography, metallography, microstructure analysis, mechanical property testing, and other materials characterization, with hands-on materials laboratory experience preferred - Mechanical aptitude for component disassembly and/or machine shop experience is an asset - Experience conducting technical literature reviews - Proficiency in digital photography to document sites and evidence - Ability to produce neat and legible handwritten notes, diagrams and sketches - Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office (MS Word, Outlook & Excel) - Excellent written and verbal presentation skills, and a good command of the English language - Well-organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities to meet deadlines, and a demonstrated track record of taking projects to successful completion - Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to discuss project budgets with clients and maintain continuous communications throughout a project - A positive, self-driven attitude with a willingness to learn and collaborate with colleagues - Graduate level degree in Materials Engineering or Materials Science is an asset - Mechanical aptitude for component disassembly and/or machine shop experience is an asset Benefits - Full access to Pario’s materials laboratory, featuring SEM/EDX, a Keyence digital microscope, sectioning, mounting and polishing equipment, hardness testers, and more - Work-life balance with hybrid work opportunities – a balance of laboratory work at our facility, field work at loss sites, joint examinations of evidence at third-party facilities, and freedom for work from home/office otherwise - Training and Career Development Opportunities - E-flex Health Benefits Program - Wellness Programs - Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) matching - Employee Referral Bonuses - Employee Recognition Program - Employee Perks (access to vendor discount programs) - Reimbursement for Professional Licenses and Dues Company Overview - SCM Insurance Services offers a suite of comprehensive insurance solutions.
