Apply Now
Application close date: 09 April 2026 The Position The School of Professional Accounting is seeking a motivated and capable Junior Lecturer to join its BCom in Accounting team within the Undergraduate Department as Junior Lecturer in the Financial Reporting & Compliance (FRCO) Theme Team. The FRCO theme covers technical competencies in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Taxation, Accounting Information Systems (AIS), including the practical application of accounting processes within systems such as Sage Business Cloud Accounting, and related compliance topics essential for professional accounting education. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for delivering modules that integrate technical accounting knowledge with applied, system-based learning, tailored specifically to meet the needs of accounting students on the BCom in Accounting. This role is suited to an early-career academic or professional with a strong foundation in accounting and a keen interest in developing their teaching capability. Experience with an online learning platform is advantageous but not required. All staff in the school work remotely and therefore, applications from anywhere in South Africa will be accepted. Some important aspects to take note of, given that our working environment differs from a standard educational institution in a number of ways:   1. Research expectation This role, along with all our current permanent academic positions, does not carry with it an expectation for the performance of any formal research. Learning and reflecting is an important part of our values and we seek to apply best practice in all that we do. However, our focus is not on formal research output and, as such, our systems and processes are not designed to either support or reward individuals committed to traditional research.   2. After-hours availability Our programmes are designed to be flexible and accommodate students who find themselves in a wide range of circumstances, specifically including working students. As a result, we offer synchronous, online live sessions to our students after-hours on a weekly basis – these occur between 5:30pm and 7:30pm on weeknights (Monday to Thursday). Additionally, academic staff members are expected to be available for after-hours online, and one-on-one consultations with students for a few hours each week, either in the evenings or early in the mornings before working hours.   3. Remote working and travel expectations The majority of our team works entirely online, as our courses are completely online. Therefore, all members of staff are expected to have a stable and reliable source of access to the internet, a backup plan in case of loadshedding and a suitable home office environment. (IT equipment, including a laptop, screen and other essentials will be provided by Milpark.)   Additionally, the team gathers in person in Cape Town roughly 4 times per year and so members of staff located elsewhere in the country are expected to travel to Cape Town for those meetings, which may require up to three nights away at a time. (The cost of this travel is covered by Milpark.)   4. Salary bands We seek to compensate our staff fairly and remunerate them in line with market-related rates. That being said, we believe that working in our team has much to offer in terms of job fulfillment and team culture which cannot be captured in monetary terms.   Responsibilities Specific responsibilities include: - Delivering modules with a strong focus on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Taxation and Accounting Information Systems (AIS), including the practical use of Sage Business Cloud Accounting, ensuring students gain both technical accuracy and applied competence. - Facilitating system-based learning through live demonstrations and guided practice. - Collaborating with colleagues on assessment design, moderation, and quality assurance to ensure alignment with SAICA competency frameworks and Milpark standards. - Working collaboratively with all staff of the department. - Material development and maintenance. - Live online session delivery to large groups of students - One-on-one consultations with students and responding to student queries via email and online discussion forums within reasonable turnaround times. - Assessment setting, marking and administration. - Participating in departmental meetings, contributing to programme reviews and performing administrative tasks relevant to the role. - Fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel encouraged to participate, ask questions, and explore complex concepts applicable to professional accountants, such as financial reporting/taxation. Professional Development, Collaboration and Engagement: - Stay abreast of developments in the relevant fields of accounting, taxation and information technology. - Continuously update and enhance knowledge and facilitation skills through professional development activities. - Collaborate with colleagues within the School of Professional Accounting and across other departments or disciplines to promote interdisciplinary learning and research initiatives. - Engage with industry partners, professional associations, and regulatory bodies to ensure that the curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the accounting profession. Education & Experience Requirements - Relevant NQF level 8 qualification (BCom Honours in Accounting or PGDA). - Demonstrated expertise in relevant areas, with sufficient experience that intersects with IFRS/Taxation and accounting principles. - Proficiency in basic Microsoft Excel functions and formulae, with the ability to analyse, interpret, and report on data. - Exposure to accounting software (e.g., Sage, Pastel) is advantageous but not required. - Limited or developing teaching experience is acceptable. - Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students from diverse backgrounds. - Excellent organisational and time management abilities, with a commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and assessment outcomes. - A collaborative and collegial approach to working with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. Key Selection Criteria  - Strong technical knowledge of IFRS and taxation, with the ability to apply these standards and principles in academic and professional contexts. - Strong verbal and written communication skills. - A passion for developing students through genuine care. - An industrious and gregarious attitude with the ability to learn, solve problems, innovate and complete tasks without close supervision. - Emotional intelligence with an aptitude and desire to build relationships. - Applicants may come from various professional backgrounds. CA(SA) designation (or eligibility) is strongly preferred. - While technical knowledge is important, equal emphasis is placed on the ability to engage students, simplify complex concepts, and facilitate applied learning.
