Job Summary
The Senior Product Manager is accountable for evaluating market needs and leading cross-functional product teams to deliver business value, drive sales, improve productivity, and enhance customer satisfaction through the creation of value-added products. This role requires a deep understanding of the customer, business objectives, and market trends, as well as the ability to work at a strategic level (developing innovative ideas for growth and change management) and tactical level (analyzing data, solving problems, and leading teams).
Key Responsibilities
- Strategy and Planning (50%):
- Develops a deep understanding of the end customer and uses that insight to determine the fastest way to deliver value.
- Translates business objectives and customer needs into product strategy, communicating direction and product requirements to development teams, matrixed teams, and external partners.
- Defines goals, metrics, and analysis to measure product value, continuously making recommendations and refinements to the product backlog based on learnings.
- Manages and grooms the product portfolio, making future decisions based on the value that will be delivered.
- Partners with Finance to understand financial requirements and aids in the creation of business cases for new opportunities.
- Monitors research and the competitive landscape to recommend the best solutions and ensure that products remain or become top-tier.
- Delivery and Execution (20%):
- Defines, tests, and refines assumptions and hypotheses through customer research and testing.
- Documents, reviews, and ensures that all quality and change control standards are met.
- Creates, prioritizes, and accepts customer stories, integrating them into release planning.
- Makes product decisions that drive value consistently.
- Identifies and considers pros, cons, issues, obstacles, conditions, and value associated with features and enhancements.
- Participates in standups, sprint planning meetings, product demos, and reviews.
- Distills complex technical concepts into non-technical language for stakeholders.
- People (30%):
- Fosters collaboration with colleagues (Engineering, UX, etc.) to drive value and identify and resolve obstacles.
- Acts as an advocate for modern software development practices.
- Advocates for the end customer and stakeholder by becoming intimate with the product, feeling for and understanding customer needs.
- Works with the product team to continuously review progress, disseminate learnings, and understand next steps.
- Manages cross-functional team and stakeholder expectations to execute on product strategy and provides guidance to requestors to determine prioritization based on tangible benefits or customer experience.
- Directs more junior colleagues in strategy, planning, analysis, and execution tasks.
- Participates in and contributes to learning exercises around modern software design and development center practices (communities of practice).
- Participates in talent acquisition, development, and retention activities in support of the team.
Requirements and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Business Administration, Marketing).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in product management, preferably in the retail or e-commerce industry.
- Proven track record of delivering business value through product innovation and customer experience.
- Strong understanding of market trends, customer needs, and business objectives.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., MBA, MS in Computer Science).
- Experience working in an Agile development environment.
- Familiarity with design thinking and customer experience principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets.
