Job Overview
As a Special Education Paraeducator in our ESP program, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs in achieving their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives. You will work closely with our special education teachers and Emotional Support Therapist to implement Behavior Support Plans and provide individualized support to students. Your responsibilities will include assisting with instructional activities, supervising students, and providing emotional support and guidance to help students succeed academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist special education teachers and Emotional Support Therapist in implementing instructional plans and Behavior Support Plans
- Provide individualized support to students with special needs, including academic, social, and emotional support
- Supervise students during instructional activities, lunch, recess, and other school-related activities
- Assist with classroom management and maintaining a positive and respectful learning environment
- Participate in staff and aide meetings to discuss student progress and develop strategies for supporting students
- Assist students with physical needs, such as lifting, toileting, positioning, transferring, and feeding
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and behavior
- Communicate effectively with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to ensure a collaborative approach to supporting students
Qualifications and Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a combination of education, experience, and skills that demonstrate your ability to support students with special needs. The following qualifications and requirements are essential:
- Paraeducator permit required, which can be obtained by completing at least two years of study at an institution of higher learning, obtaining an associate's (or higher) degree, or demonstrating knowledge of and the ability to assist in the instruction of reading, writing, and mathematics
- Cooperative attitude and superior work ethic, with a strong commitment to working in a team-oriented environment
- Positive experience working with children, preferably in a special education setting
- High level of computer knowledge, with the ability to use technology to support instruction and communication
- Ability to lift, transfer, and position students with physical disabilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, therapists, and other support staff
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a special education setting, preferably in an Emotional Support Program (ESP)
- Knowledge of Behavior Support Plans and experience implementing positive behavioral interventions
- Training or experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
- Ability to speak multiple languages, with a focus on languages spoken by our student population
- Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and abilities
