About AVID and Our Program
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness program designed to support students in achieving their academic goals. The program focuses on providing students with the skills, motivation, and support needed to succeed in college and beyond. As an AVID Tutor, you will be working with students in small groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress toward college and career readiness skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct in-person tutorial sessions that emphasize collaborative learning and peer-to-peer teaching through discussion of class and text notes.
- Determine the concepts that need to be the focus of tutorial sessions based on student tutorial worksheets, notes, and discussions.
- Guide students to take ownership of their active learning while providing strategies for independent use.
- Assist students in any subject area by being familiar with students' textbooks and materials and AVID classroom resources.
- Provide constructive feedback online and/or in-person on student work.
- Support AVID scholars through care and connection.
- Take responsibility for setting a positive tone and atmosphere in the AVID classroom.
- Assist the AVID coordinator as requested, such as contacting teachers regarding course outlines and assignment schedules, helping with field trips, contacting parents, etc.
- Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
- Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or have completed a college or university program.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Familiarity with AVID program principles and methodologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with students in an educational setting.
- Familiarity with curriculum and instructional materials.
- Experience with tutoring or mentoring students.
- Knowledge of college and career readiness skills.
