Overview
We are seeking an experienced California-based Independent Contractor Grant Writer to support behavioral health and substance use treatment facility projects. This is a remote contract position for someone with a strong background in grant writing, fundraising, and behavioral health/substance use treatment services.
The ideal candidate has direct experience writing grants for behavioral health, mental health, and/or substance use treatment programs and understands the California funding landscape. We are looking for someone who can identify relevant opportunities, write compelling proposals, and demonstrate a strong track record of grant success.
Responsibilities:
• Research and identify grant opportunities for behavioral health and substance use treatment facilities in California
• Write, edit, and submit grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting funding documents
• Assist with fundraising strategy and help identify public and private funding opportunities
• Work with leadership to gather program information, outcomes data, budgets, and required attachments
• Develop persuasive narratives that clearly communicate program impact and funding need
• Track submission deadlines, requirements, and reporting obligations
• Provide grant readiness and funding strategy support as needed
Qualifications:
• Must be based in California
• Proven experience writing grants for behavioral health, mental health, and/or substance use treatment organizations
• Experience with fundraising and development support
• Strong understanding of California-based funding opportunities preferred
• Demonstrated track record of successful grant awards or fundraising outcomes
• Strong writing, editing, research, and organizational skills
• Able to work independently, communicate clearly, and meet deadlines
• Must be able to provide examples of success, references, or a summary of prior funded work
Preferred Experience:
• Experience with residential treatment, detox, IOP, PHP, outpatient, or community behavioral health programs
• Familiarity with California behavioral health systems, county funding opportunities, or nonprofit/public grant environments
• Experience supporting both grant writing and broader fundraising efforts
